Case Study
Opportune had the privilege of partnering with the Ministry of Education, Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga, to support their commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. As part of their efforts to demonstrate their leadership in climate action and to comply with the Climate Neutral Government Programme (CNGP), the Ministry sought emissions verification services from Opportune.
Not only was the Ministry of Education responsible for preparing their own corporate footprint, they also took on the challenge of calculating the carbon footprint for the 2,100 schools in New Zealand. The complexity and size of their operations meant they faced challenges in collating the huge volume of data into highly complex models that reliably portrayed the emissions sources from across the organisation.
Opportune worked closely with the Ministry of Education and their experts to conduct a comprehensive verification of their greenhouse gas inventory, utilising New Zealand and internationally recognised methodologies and standards (Specifically CNGP, GHG Protocol and ISO 14064). Leveraging our expertise in emissions accounting and verification, we meticulously reviewed and validated emissions data from diverse sources, including energy consumption, pupil and staff commute, and school operations.
Through our independent verification process, Opportune provided the Ministry of Education with assurance regarding the accuracy and reliability of their emissions data. This enabled the Ministry to confidently report their greenhouse gas inventory, demonstrating transparency and accountability in their environmental performance. Our collaboration empowered the Ministry to identify emission reduction opportunities and prioritise ongoing sustainability initiatives towards achieving their climate action goals.
